WHO IS REBREATHER DIVING FOR?
Using a rebreather might seem complicated, overly technical, or elitist. While it is true that the practice demands rigor, it is incorrect to think that the activity is reserved for a select few.
Any diver with the desire and motivation can train in this technique. This is where the instructor plays a key role in turning that desire into actual skills.
Rebreather diving is open to anyone aged 18 or older; prerequisites include holding at least an Open Water certification and having experience and certification in decompression diving or Advanced Nitrox.
LEARNING A NEW TECHNIQUE:
A closed-circuit rebreather requires (among other things) two small cylinders to operate. One always contains pure oxygen, while the other serves as a diluent. Air is used as the diluent at depths of up to 40 meters. Beyond this depth, a mixture known as trimix (oxygen, nitrogen, and helium) is breathed to minimize risks associated with nitrogen narcosis.
A rebreather can be mechanical, electronic, or hybrid.
With a mechanical unit, the diver creates an optimal gas mixture in real time based on their current depth.
With an electronic unit, the diver only intervenes in the event of a malfunction.
With a hybrid unit—such as the rEvo Rebreather—the diver can still manually manage the gas mixture while also benefiting from electronic assistance.
Rebreather training involves understanding how this specialized machine works, as well as learning how to operate it and handle malfunctions or issues.
